                                                                                      PROGRAM INFORMATION

Dear Volunteer,

Welcome to the International work camps organised by UVIKIUTA in the United Republic of Tanzania. Around the globe people volunteers are demonstrating the power of volunteerism in meeting critical needs of their communities, country and the world. Last year we hosted 10 International volunteer work camps across the country which attracted more than 200 hundred volunteers from within the country and across the world.

Background:  Bega kwa Bega [side by side] Work camp Program is a cross-cultural exchange program involving people from across the world, living and sharing life in the local hosting community. UVIKIUTA has been running this program since 1994 when the first work camp was organized in cooperation with of Service Civil International (SCI), Germany Branch. Since then the work camps has become a year around activity for UVIKIUTA. Over the years the work camps has served to enrich the lives of approximately 3000 participants through camps programs fostering International understanding and promoting ideas of peace, human rights, Cultural heritage, self reliance, environmental conservation and sustainable development.

Work camp Philosophy: International Work camps seek to provide an experience that connects service, culture, professional and personal growth. While the service we offer does improve the quality of life for others, it is equally important as a time to reflect on our own lives. The significance of what we do is more than social charity; it is an encounter with real people in the real world.  International Work camps go beyond the familiar road of commercial society, taking us outside of our comforts so that we can spend the time in someone else's shoes. By working with people in various cultures, we learn to recognize the world we all share. We realize that our lives are interconnected and that our stories have common threads. We hope that by serving others you will discover you and better understand your own values and responsibilities as global citizen.

II: OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES

§         To promote contacts between people of different cultural and social backgrounds, breaking down linguistic and cultural barriers, creating understanding and appreciation of others.

§         Increase among the participants an increased awareness, understanding and appreciation of socio-economic realities of their own countries and Tanzania.

§          To give volunteers and the community we work with, the experience of life where all members are equal and permit them to learn and accept responsibility both for the work done and for the functioning of the group.

§         To provide Inter-cultural learning experience and opportunity to explore a new country/region and culture deeper and more respectful way.

§         To integrate the participants into local community so as to learn from their host about the issues which concern them and their response.

§         To promote the culture of peace by developing integration, solving problems peaceful, reducing enemy images and respecting differences.

Structure:A group of 15 to 30 volunteers accompanied by one Camp leader and kitchen staff spend 2-3 weeks in the community, having group living, taking part in community volunteer work projects, and undertaking excursions to specific sites of interest which support the group learning objectives and deepen their understanding of the host community. Most of the time volunteers spend time together.

Volunteer Profile: Anybody with the minimum age of 18 years old is eligible to join the International work camps.
Parents or authorized guardians should accompany younger volunteers. No age limit and families are encouraged to participate.
We prefer to have volunteers who are flexible and easy to adopt in case of any changes in the project.
Volunteers who are able to arrive on time and stay till the end, makes the group atmosphere consistent.

Activities:Community Service: Options for volunteer work will vary depending on the host community, availability of materials, and number of volunteers and sometimes season/weather. Normally volunteers work as volunteers for 5 days of the week and 4-6 hours a day. Volunteers work could be tree planting to conserve water sources, construction of community facilities like classrooms, health centers etc, painting, community development initiatives [reforestation, recycling, education on health/environment issues] or combination of all those.

Community activities: Volunteers get involved in family and community activities- sports, religious ceremonies/services, social and cultural- in order to learn more about the community, often while providing volunteer assistance.
Communal Living: For the entire period of the work camp, volunteers will leave together in a common place, sharing life together. They have great time to prepare meals and do other social activities. Volunteers normally stay in the hostel, residential house, school, tents etc depending on the facilities available in the host community.

Educational Activities:  At regular intervals, volunteers and the local community come together as a group to reflect on the leaning that they are doing in the community. Volunteers and the local community participate in various workshops in which they learn about community issues related to the environment, economic initiatives, HIV/AIDS, gender issues, as well as the cultural traditions of the region.
A topic depends so much on the group interest. Every evening each country presented has an opportunity to make presentation to the team and the community. The presentations are based on their social, economy, political and culture of their home countries. This component [famous known as cultural nights] has been used to raise awareness both to the community and the participants on various issues.

Orientation and Evaluation: Volunteers need to be prepared with orientation. They will receive a full day of general preparatory workshops on their arrival before joining the host community. At the end of the program, volunteer usually gather for a day to reflect and evaluate the program. This is also known as a day a farewell were we meeting with all community members.

What to Expect: UVIKIUTA International work camps are organized in very simple way but comfortable enough.  While most work camps are not extreme difficult, positive attitudes, flexibility, and openness to new experiences are essential for every volunteer. Participants who have the best time at work camps are those who can most successfully adapt to their surroundings. Although the projects and living conditions are different for each work camp, they all share some basic universals. You can expect to eat, to sleep, to shower, to work hard, to play, and most importantly, to have fun! While at the work camp, you'll get to meet and work with lots of people from all over the world and cultivate friendships that last much longer than just two to three weeks weeks.

UVIKIUTA International work camps are always organised in co-operation with either local authorities or local organisations; the projects are designed to respond to needs of the community and are always for the common good. Meetings with the local population are an important part of the projects. Also we try in each work camp to mobilise participants from the village for an active participation to the work camp. Sometimes they are coming only for leisure time, sometimes they participate also to the work, and sometimes they have to be totally part of the project. In general it’s their first (international experience).

Two leaders are present in each work camp: one for the group life, and another for technical work (this one could be provided by the local community and so he/she is not having to stay after the work itself). Sometimes only one is present (small groups). UVIKIUTA camp leaders participate in trainings organised by UVIKIUTA and they manage the budget camp budget, leisure, excursions, etc. The training includes as well the personnel’s who manage the kitchen. With UVIKIUTA International Work camps, working time is about 6 hours a day, but in fact it is more important to attain the works objective, defined between the local partner and UVIKIUTA.

Leisure time is not planned before: [in some cases we have some option available] the leisure activities will be organised by the group with the local volunteers and it will be based on the discovery of the region.

III: IMPORTANT TO KNOW

Food and Accommodation: Food and accommodation will be provided by UVIKIUTA to all volunteers during the camp. General accommodation is basic: a common room for sleeping and eating. Normally we have bedrooms enough for everybody though sometimes sharing and using mattress on the floor, living room, dining, kitchen and bathrooms.  UVIKIUTA employs professional cook to take care of the food but volunteers will be helping to prepare meals and share other kitchen responsibilities.  Vegetarian meals are always available.
