Project
(http://www.mirtesen.org.ru/pages/spbcamps_2004_e.php ). St.-Petersburg
is one of the Russia's major industrial and cultural centers with the population
of almost 5 million people (http://eng.gov.spb.ru/culture
). It was founded by Tsar Peter the Great and yet for more than 300 years
remains one of the most beautiful cities in the world. It is the cradle
of Russian culture, "Northern Venice", the city of white nights,
which unique spirit attracts people from all over the world. Over the course
of several centuries from St. Petersburg's foundation in 1703, magnificent
palace and park complexes were constructed close to the Russian capital:
Peterhof (Petrodvorets), Tsarskoye Selo (Pushkin), Pavlovsk, and a number
of other country residences for Emperors, Grand Princes and grandees. They
reflect all stages in the development of Russian architecture and landscaping
from the 18th to 20th centuries.
Vasilievsky Island is the oldest part of Saint-Petersburg and the
largest island in the Neva delta. From
the very
foundation of St. Petersburg, Vasilievsky
Island
was intended to become the administrative, scientific and cultural heart
of downtown St Petersburg. Commercial port was moved by Peter I
to
the east part of the island, washed by Big and Small Nevas, called
Strelka
(spit) of the Vasilievsky
Island. Also
some of the buildings, such as the Customs House, still remind us today
of Tsar Peters original intentions. There are SPb state university, Academy
of Sciences and Arts, Mountain Institute.
Many
well-known museums are situated on the island, such as, first Russian museum
– The museum of anthropology and ethnography, founded by Peter I and the
best known as, Kunstkamera.
There
are over 1 million articles telling us about lifestyle of different peoples
of the world. Many of them are unique. You can visit the ZOOLOGICAL MUSEUM
- one of the largest in the world. The scientific collection of the museum
numbers 17 million species, 500,000 of which are on display. There are a
lot of places you can be interested in, but from the very beginning of your
visiting this part of SPb youll be charmed by magnificent architectural
ensemble, built after the turn of the 19th century on Vasilevsky Island
- The Stock Exchange and Rostral Columns. Red Rostral Columns, originally
built as beacons for ships navigating the waters of the Neva River.... Nowadays
the central Naval museum is located in the historical building of the Stock
Exchange. The museum numbers over 800,000 items, including «the Grandfather
of the Russian Navy» - the old boat of Peter the Great, models of
vessels, examples of armaments and military machinery, marine paintings.
We invite you to visit Vasilievsky
Island at the period of White Nights in SPb. Its the most favorite
time for tourists - there is
no real darkness at night. Its a period of walking along the embankments, period of drawing of bridges to let different ships through. White
nights are famous all over the world. But one cant tell anything until he/she
feels that the day doesnt end. No nights at all

from the 18th to 20th centuries. The
camp will take place in Pushkin- the place of a great historical and cultural
significance. This small city is a suburb of Saint-Petersburg and every
year lots of tourists come here for picturesque sights (www.pushkin-town.net). Having been presented by tsar Peter the Great to Ekaterina, since
1725 this place became officially the Tsars favorite country residence.
During the reign of the Empress Ekaterina ll Tsarskoye Selo got the highest
point of its prosperity and changed unrecognizably with the help of the
best architects of that time: Kvarneghy, Rinaldy, Cameron, Rastrelli, etc.
The landscape is dominated by the Catherine Park and Alexander Park with
their beautiful palaces, ponds, cascades, entertaining pavilions, monuments
of ancient Rome, medieval-styled
buildings, which are wonderful works of the Russian art of gardening from
the 18th and 19th centuries and combine the genuine masterpieces of architecture
with the beauty of the transforming nature of the north. The legend of the
Amber Room, which was considered to be the Eighth Wonder of the World and
got lost during the World War II has inspired films, thrillers and treasure
hunters. Nowadays you could admire the dignity of the room. The reconstruction
was ended several years ago. The town is also obliged by its fame to some
generations of poets, writers, culture workers of the Russian culture, who
lived there. In Tsarskoselskyi Lyceum the great Russian poet Pushkin spent
several years as a pupil. In 1937, when it was 100 years of Pushkin's death,
the city got his name.
Work Various works, not requiring any
special qualifications: gardening, maintaining the park territory, cleaning
it from garbage (old grass, leaves, brunches), watering flowers, cutting
bushes, sweeping the grounds, etc. Moreover you can be asked to take part
in organization work for the holiday-carnival.
Accommodation for
the volunteers will be prepared in two ways. On the one hand volunteers
could stay in dormitories. On the other hand they could stay in tents right
at the territory of Catherine Park.
Volunteers have to prepare meals themselves.
Location
Pushkin is situated about 30 km from Saint-Petersburg. It will
take you not more than 30 min to get there by bus or train from the city-center.
Terminal Pulkovo-2

Old Ladoga is a small town in Leningrad region www.oldladoga.ru. Old Ladoga is located about 170 km from the St-Petersburg. For twelve centuries stands Ladoga on the steep
bank of Volhov river. The genesis and development of this city is connected
to the Russian statehood. The Normanns and the Slaves, Ugro-Finnish tribes,
the merchants from West and East, all nations lived in this land, visited
it moving along the great trade routes, the most famous of which is a route
“from the Varangians into the Greeks”. The historical-architectural conservation
area is situated on its territory now. The fortress was rebuilt several
times on the basis of the ancient fortifications. Two churches of pre-Mongol
period preserved: the pearl of Ladoga, St. George church and the church
of the Assumption of holy Mother on the territory of Assumption convent.
The ancient capital used to be a fortification post that protected Russian
lands from the Northwest and the citadel of Orthodoxy. Many convents and
churches are built, a part of them unfortunately was lost, however everything
available to see today fascinates and generates a desire to come back here.
During the past few years the ancient village has been restored. The monuments
are reconstructed, the orthodox shrines are given back to the church. At
any times people who are interested in history and cultural heritage are
coming to Old Ladoga. Today Ladoga is turning into the tourist center, the
infrastructure of the tourist industry is developing. However the charm

The Yusupov Gardens - the gardens of
the Yusupov Palace on the River Fontanka (not to be confused with the other
Yusupov Palace on the River Moika) - opened to the general public in 1863,
quickly becoming a popular place for both summer and winter entertainment.
Interestingly, the character of the visitors varied considerably depending
upon the time of year. In
the winter, this was the 'silver paradise' sung by Vladimir Nabokov, a fashionable
place to walk, skate, and sled. Russia's first and best skating rink, surrounded
by elegant wooden galleries and lit by the glamorous magic of electricity,
opened on the pond here in 1865. In
1897 and 1903 the rink hosted the European figure-skating championships.
This was also the venue for high-society balls on ice. In
the summer, when fashionable society upped and left for their dachas, the
gardens were taken over by a different crowd - poor people, peasants, and
workers from the streets round about. Entertainments included Russia's first
shooting range and hot-air balloons. Today
the gardens are scruffy and unkempt, but still a refreshing oasis amidst
the dusty stone labyrinth of the Haymarket area.

Pavlovsk (http://www.alexanderpalace.org/pavlovsk)
was built for Russian Tsar Paul I, only son of Catherine the Great. The
palace is located southeast of the city of St. Petersburg, a few miles beyond
the town of Tsarskoe Selo. The original estate was around 1500 acres and
was a gift from Catherine to Paul on the birth of his first son, the future
Tsar Alexander I, in 1777. Work on the palace began in 1781 under the direction
of the famous Scottish architect, Charles Cameron. Being one of Catherine's
favorite architects did not enamour him with Paul and his wife Maria. Paul
detested his mother and had a habitual aversion to her favorites. After
Cameron's departure, many other architects worked at Pavlovsk, including
Voronikhin, Brenna, Rossi and others.Pavlovsk has a dual look and feel,
which reflects the different outlook and tastes of its oweners, Paul and
Maria. Pauls hand can be seen in prominent militaristic motifs throughout
many of the state rooms, while elsewhere one can see the exquisite and refined
tastes of his wife at work. After the murder of Paul in 1801, Pavlovsk became
the primary residence of his widow. After her death in 1828 the palace passed
to their son, Grand Duke Mikhail Petrovich. Mikhail was childless and bequeathed
Pavlovsk to his nephew Konstantin Nickolaevich, who left in turn to his
son, the famous poet Konstanin Konstantinovich. During this period the main
building of the palace was recognised by the Romanov family as a unique
artistic and historic legacy and was preserved as a virtual museum. Very
few changes were made to the decoration and it continued to have the look
and feel of the early 19th century. After the revolution the palace passed
through difficult times involving many threats to its very survival. During
WWII the palace was badly damaged and looted. It was restored after the
war and is now open as a museum. For the best history of the building look
for "Pavlovsk, Life of a Russian Palace" by Suzanne Massie.

hectares and demonstrates nearly two thousand animals belonging to 410 species.
Each beast, bird or reptile is peculiar as well as attractive in its own
way (www.spbzoo.ru).
The Polar bear was chosen for our Zoo's emblem due to the fact that these
rare arctic animals have got acclimatized in Saint- Petersburg perfectly

It is known all over the world as a capital of fountains (www.peterhof.org).
The magical play of water brings you back to epoch of the Russian tsar Peter
the Great, who was the initiator of the construction of this exquisite summer
resident. The Russian tsars were the owners of Petrodvorets Palaces and
Gardens for two centuries. Verkhniy (Upper) Garden and Nizhniy (Lower) Parks,
genius masterpieces, more than 150 fountains, 5 monumental cascades. The
group is made up of the Bolshoy palace, the Cottage palace, the Monplaisir
palace, the Marli palace, Yekaterininsky building, and the Hermitage Pavilions.
Later, during the reign of Empress Anna Ioannovna, the Marli Cascade
was decorated with marble; the Ruin Cascade was reconstructed to form the
Dragon Cascade (Chess Hill); the Fountain Alley was formed in Lower Park,
and the Roman Fountains were erected. Five fountains with sculptures were
located in the Upper Park. The famous sculpture Samson tearing the lions
mouth at Grand Cascade was installed in honor of the 25th anniversary of
Poltava Victory over Swedish Troops. The fountain water supply is indeed
unique because fountains were designed according to the law of communicated
vessels. Kolonistskiy Park is a beautiful example of architect, sculpture,
paintings, and landscape gardening.
Work

weed lawns, loosen soil around the grass-plots, lawns, bushes; will cut
bushes; rake up mowed grass and put it on the tractor. Volunteers will root

Old Ladoga
is a small town in Leningrad region www.oldladoga.ru.
Old
Ladoga
is located about 170 km from the St-Petersburg.
For twelve centuries stands Ladoga on the steep bank of Volhov river. The
genesis and development of this city is connected to the Russian statehood.
The Normanns and the Slaves, Ugro-Finnish tribes, the merchants from West
and East, all nations lived in this land, visited it moving along the great
trade routes, the most famous of which is a route from the Varangians into
the Greeks. The historical-architectural conservation area is situated on
its territory now. The fortress was rebuilt several times on the basis of
the ancient fortifications.
Monument Gostinopol'e - a medieval
settlement appeared in 11-12 c. AD. mentioned in Russian and German Chronicles
and deeds of 13th c. situated in a very nice, especially in Summer time,
place, on a small hill full of greenery, near the ruines of stone 19 century
church , 150 km from St.Petersburg, 50 km from the Volkhov town, on the
bank of Volkhov river.
Expedition The North-West expedition of
St.Petersburg University and Staraya Ladoga museum create investigations
on Russian North-West medieval monuments. Tesovsky unit of North-West expedition
was created in 1994. Instead of studying Tesovo settlement we also investigate
medieval Ivangorod Road, founded a number of late medieval stone crosses
in Tesovo surroundings, etc. Our unit works in close contact with the cultural
anthropologists from European University in St.Petersburg, so we try to
make our investigation interdisciplinary. Today
Ladoga is turning into the tourist center, the infrastructure of the tourist
industry is developing. However the charm of this place is in the beauty
of nature and in the fascination of land where every piece remembers the
events of the past centuries and keeps mysteries so much longed by the archeologists.
Work taking
part in archeological digging.
Accommodation will
be provided
in
the Monastery at
facilities/tents
